Tate Reeves and Democratic challenger Brandon Presley were set to face off Wednesday night in their only debate to cap a hard-fought campaign, six days before the Nov. 7 general election. Presley has raised $11.3 million for his campaign this year, compared with Reeves' $6.3 million, according to finance reports filed Tuesday. Presley has spent $10.8 million and still has $1.3 million, while Reeves has spent $11 million and still has $1.2 million. Presley called on Reeves to take part in five debates, including one last month at a forum sponsored by the NAACP in Gulfport. During the 2019 campaign for governor, Reeves had two debates with Democratic nominee Jim Hood.

The state hasn't wavered as a conservative stronghold in the modern era, and its last Democratic governor was denied a second term 20 years ago. A former mayor of tiny Nettleton, Presley is wrapping up his fourth term as a state utility regulator for northern Mississippi. One of the most famous Black Mississippi residents, Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman, recently joined him at a campaign event. Presley has raised more campaign cash than Reeves this year, and he's attracting larger and more diverse crowds than any Democrat running for Mississippi governor in a generation. Presley says the new method of electing a governor gives him a better chance than the old one.

A Mississippi high school tried to force a trans girl to wear boy's clothes for graduation. The ACLU has filed a lawsuit against the Harrison County School District on the student's behalf. The trans girl skipped her graduation after a district official told her parents she had to dress "like a boy." Graduating boys in the school district are expected to wear white shirts and black pants. Harrison Central High School and the Harrison County School District did not immediately return Insider's request for comment on Sunday.

Gulfport, Mississippi, is the most affordable coastal town in the US to buy a house, per Realtor.com. The average price for a house that is located within a mile of the beach in Gulfport is $144 per square foot, making it the cheapest coastal town, per Realtor.com's report. The average cost of a coastal house there was $224,900, it said. Its list is limited to just one beach town per state, and also includes some bayside areas as well as towns next to the ocean. A Black teenager in Mississippi has died days after local police shot him in the head outside a discount store, and his relatives are questioning officers’ actions. Police shot Jaheim McMillan, 15, Thursday in the parking lot of a Family Dollar store in Gulfport, the state's second-largest city after Jackson, which lies about 160 miles to the north. Gulfport Police Chief Adam Cooper said an officer engaged an armed suspect, since identified as McMillan, resulting in shots being fired.
